What we found was a complex series of attributes that would guide our engineers in their design process: Comfort and ease of use were important, as was price.
However, durability was key, and broken end hooks were mentioned most often as the reason tape measures required replacement. Blade markings that wore off too quickly were also mentioned frequently as a chronic problem. We listened and we understood. Then, we challenged our engineers to design a better tape.
